Rufford Abbey Country Park, Nottinghamshire

Address: Rufford Abbey Country Park, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, NG22 9DF

A great place to spend the day or afternoon exploring the parkland and woodland with both children and dogs. There is plenty to see and do with with walks through the native woodlands, a lake and gardens plus a range of attractions, activities and places to relax and eat. There is always plenty of family fun and activities taking place throughout the year including popular Halloween, Easter and Christmas trails, all of which are outdoors and dog friendly.

Here are 5 reasons to visit:

1. Adventure Play Area (Free to use) - unfortunately dogs aren't allowed in the playground but there is plenty of benches so they can be close by with a parent. The play area is suitable for younger and older children, including climbing apparatus and slides. There are swings, a sandpit, zip line and musical instruments to try. Not to mention the tunnels to explore, picnic areas and its all free.

2. Interactive walks and trails - Currently operating a one-way system around the lake however its a great stroll for little legs. They host fun and special themed trails and walks too throughout the year which are always dog friendly.

3. Lots to explore - Rufford Abbey has a mixture of grounds and gardens to explore including;

  • The Abbey Meadow, an informal grassland area where grass is left long in places for insects and butterflies

  • The Formal Gardens, including several interesting items of modern sculpture

  • The Abbey Lawn and The Sheep Meadow, largely consisting of mown grassland that is fairly flat, making it the perfect place for younger visitors to let off steam. Picnics are also welcome here and family picnic tables are provided close to the lake path

  • Rufford lake - great buggy friendly walk

  • Nature woodland

4. All the facilities - if you need food, snacks, gifts or changing facilities - this place fully caters for all your needs. Currently operating takeaway only food and snacks. Parking is bookable in advance to guarantee entry.

5. Its all FREE (apart from your parking!)
